NEED TO KNOW

Halong Bay

One of the most beautiful places on the planet is Halong- a marvel of the earth erected towards the high skies. It is recognized as the world natural heritage two times by UNESCO and could take several months to discover all the beauty of Halong. Here are a few scenic highlights of the region that you should not miss when visit:

1/ First of all, it is Halong Bay. Taking a cruise trip around Halong is one of the best ways to experience the beauty of the Bay. While exploring the bay, you will feel lost in a legendary world of stone islands which shapes change depending on the angle and the light: Human Head Islet, Cock and Hen Islet, Sail Islet, Dragon Islet, Frog Islet, Incense Burner Islet…and lots of the strange-shaped rocks challenge your imagination.

Cave system is extremely excellent in the Gulf: Thien Cung (Heavenly Palace Grotto), Dau Go (Driftwood Grotto) and Sung Sot (Surprise Grotto) are famous grottoes attracting tourists. Put your feet into the grotto, a cool feeling hugs you, takes away the intense heat of summer, bring pleasant and refreshing feeling. The stalactites in the cave are masterpiece of nature with many amazing and different shapes.
Quang Ninh province owns a range of over 250 kilometers of coastline and it is granted in favor of many beautiful beaches. Soi Sim beach is beautiful and less tourists. This is a small island located on the west of Halong Bay, 12 km from Bai Chay harbor (Halong City). The island has a primeval forest with rich variety of plants, including many endemic and valuable species; they are ecological characteristic of Ha Long Bay. Soi Sim attracts tourist by the pristine beauty, quiet, clear blue water. But if you want to have an overview of Ha Long Bay, Ti Top Island is the best choice. Besides swimming, you can climb up the mountain to admire the picturesque beauty of the bay

Most of itinerary for two days or more have a visit the fishing village - a very special feature of fisherman. You can take a kayak to reach the fish cages. Lots of fishes are reared in the cage, this is place providing seafood for restaurant of Halong.

2/ If you are interested in exploring new things, go to Van Don Island district and Co To island district. From Halong city to Van Don, you can take a bus number 01 or coach to Cai Rong port. From Hanoi, there are a lot of coaches to Cam Pha, Cua Ong at My Dinh and Luong Yen coach station. Some good companies you should choose as Hoang Long or Kumho Viet Thanh. It normally takes 4,5 hours to reach Cua Ong from Hanoi. If you go by bus, let ask driver in Vietnamese “Vui lòng cho tôi xuống ngã ba Vân Đồn”(please drop me off at Van Don fork ). Then you catch the local bus with label "Cai Rong" and ask to drop off at Van Don Post Office. From here, it is about 1.5km to get to Cai Rong port, so you should go taxi to get there. At Cai Rong port, you can choose the boat to go Van Don or Co To as your option

a. Van Don Island district: Recommend choosing Ngoc Vinh boat of Phuc Thinh Ltd,. to Quan Lan island, it takes more than 45 minutes to get there. Means of transport in Quan Lan is quite rudimentary, Tuc-tuc is the most common means here. In addition, you can rent a motorbike or bicycle to visit the island. Not only the poetic beauty and charm of Bai Tu Long Bay and Bai Tu Long National Park, but also Van Don owns a lot of beautiful beaches such as: Quan Lan, Minh Chau, Ngoc Vung. It is worth mentioning, the beaches still remain unspoiled natural beauty with clear blue water and white sand stretching several kilometers. Moreover, the landscape here is so fresh, quiet and suitable for long-term convalescence.

b. Co To Island district: Bien Dong boat should be chosen because it is large, clean and high safety. The boat often departs at 6.30am and 1pm at Cai Rong port-Van Don to Co To; Leave Co To to come back Cai Rong port at the same time. If you reach Cai Rong in the evening, you can stay overnight at hotels or motels near the port. There are plenty of hotels to choose from. Come to Co To, you will find the quite untouched beaches. Hong Van beach is the most beautiful one with a length of 2km, almost no boat anchoring, gentle sands, wide and clear blue. At the end of this beach have quite beautiful rocks. This beach owns coral reefs stretching 2.8 km long, suitable for diving activities to explore the seabed. Each class of fish is swimming up with a variety of colors, although it does not have beauty as Nha Trang or Phu Quoc, but it is still a great gift with climatic conditions of north. Van Chay beach is nice and far away from the center but you must be dangerous if swimming near rocks because of whirlpool

3/ One more destination I would like to mention is handicraft villages in Ha Long - coal carving village. Quang Ninh province is a huge coal mine in Vietnam, coal is not only provide for industry but also make many amazing works contributing to the art - coal fine art, such  as vases, statues of human or animals and decorative articles... It is sophisticated so that makes me think it is made from wood, not coal from the first time I saw. There are 2 main types of products one is coarse and one has been polished. They all seem to be exuding elegance and ingenuity of artisans. Today there are few stores selling this product, but if you are interested in, you can still find it at Le Thanh Tong street or Halong night market.

Halong is really wonderful place to visit. If you have a chance, don’t miss it. Come and feel by yourself, I am definitely sure it will not make you disappointed!

Luxury Cruises Halong Bay Vietnam

Luxury Cruises Halong Bay

Thousands of large and small islands rising from the clear blue water, with many spectacular scenery of grottoes and caves, form a beautiful bay- a fanciful and grandeur sculptures of nature, which has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Standing in the vast of ocean and sky, tourists seem to be lost in the magical world. One arriving is once feeling stunned by the beauty of the bay!

Not to be missed an excursion to explore Halong bay. Normally one night is enough time to have an overall view of the bay but if possible 2 nights would be better. Halong bay is popular destination of the world, so there are a lot of options for boat for you to choose. There are different quality ships, mostly affecting facilities of boat, cabins and food...The sightseeing will be the same. So, I would like to give you some information of Halong boats. I hope it will help!

At first, we talk about luxury junks. One of them is Paradise Peak cruise Halong as no other can beat them in term of service and quality; it is the most extreme luxury boat with 8 cabins on Halong bay at that time (2013). It has redefined the boundaries of a sumptuous floating hotel that liked a five star luxury hotel. The rooms are huge and maintained beautifully. The cabin is from 38 m² to 42 m² featuring a bedroom, a large en-suite bathroom and a private dining area. Paradise Peak Cruise suites display large bay windows allowing guests to capture each and every wonder of the formidable surrounding seascape. All members of the crews are friendly, helpful and professional. The food is amazing and delicious; don't miss the duck and the pork chops if you have a chance to cruise with. Of course, it is definitely the most expensive boat but worth every penny if you can afford to stay on.

The second is Violet cruise Halong. To be launched on 1st November 2009, the boat offers the perfect mix in traditional elegance and modern comfort. It is also 5 stars cruise with a crew of 20, you will get a good service. The food is fresh and great. The rooms, cabins, lounges, balconies, suites and parlors are actively excellent. With a maximum of 12 guests on board, it seems to be you have a private tour, everything is so personal and you do not envy the larger boats sailing past. Because of quite less cabin - 6 cabins, so it is full very soon. If you really love to cruise with, I highly suggest making a reservation as soon as you can. And its price is only after the Paradise Peak.

The last one I would like to mention is Pelican Luxury Cruise. It is a brand-new cruise which has come into operation since early 2012. There are 22 cabins with facilities of 4-stars cruise will make your excursion unforgettable. Buffets on boat are so delicious and crews are friendly. Cabin is large and well designed. The upper deck is very big so you can find a place to enjoy the view of surrounded by other passengers. If you are looking for a luxury boat but not quite expensive, Pelican Luxury Cruise may the best choice.

Whatever boat you choose, I hope you enjoy your cruise and have a fabulous memory of Halong. And please don’t forget to respect the World Heritage of UNESCO by do not collect rock samples, respect the environment and don't throw garbage on the sea!

1/ Halong Bay:

It means “where the dragon descended into the sea”. It is made up of 1,969 islands of various sizes, 989 of which have been given names. There are two kinds of islands, limestone and schist.

2/ Surprise Grotto:
Surprising grotto

It is located on Bo Hon Island. It is also the most large and beautiful grotto in Halong bay and there are a lot of stones with distinctive shapes around there which nowhere has. Climbing 50 steps up and down about 10 steps from docks then you will touch the entrance of grotto. Its height is 25 meters and 10,000 m2 of width with thousands of stalagmites and stalactites. This is one of the typical karst grottos and high scientific value

3/ Driftwood Grotto:

Dau Go grotto is located at a height of 27 meters over sea level, the same age with Surprise Grotto about 2 million years ago. It has about 5000 m2 of width; wide entrance is 17 m and 12 m of height. The reason why is called driftwood grotto because of its legend. According to ancient legend: A long time ago in the war against the Mongol army, general Tran Hung Dao prepared many ironwood stakes here to plug into the bed of the Bach Dang River and there are many pieces of wood left in the grotto, so it is named as today - Driftwood Grotto.

30km from the wharf, Cua Van is home to nearly 180 households. Their life was simple and naive on the colorful floating houses, surrounded by great limestone mountains of the bay.
There are floating a primary school and clinic here. The Cua Van School has only three classrooms, a library and a room for teachers. The areas of the rooms are very modest. Pupils learn only from grade 1 to grade 5. Every day, the small bamboo-baskets are driven by tiny oars going to school. They were born in floating houses on the sea, so can swim from 3 to 4 years old they and 5 or 6 years old they can row skillfully
The scene here is so peaceful, gentle and contains the pristine of fishing village. Especially, travel site Journeyetc.com voted Cua Van fishing village is one of the 16 most beautiful ancient villages in the world.

Height of cave is from 2.5m to 4m depending on the tide. Roof cave has bow shape with stalactites hang down. Lake inside looks like a stadium with stands beveled up and spanned around. There are a lot of ferns, orchids and sago palm on the cliffs. The only way to get inside is take small boats.

Ba Ham lake

Situated on southeast of Dau Be island chain and about 25 km far from Tourist Wharf is Ba Ham Lake. It is known for its charming beauty. There are 3 large lakes connecting together and with 3 caves and only visit by the small boats. In addition to beautiful scenery, it also has a richness and abundance of plants and animals, such as monkeys, ferrets, birds, corals, shrimp, fish, orchids, palm, cycads, flying squirrels, silver-headed parrots, bats and butterflies...

The cave is quite long and dark, sometimes you could see the sunlight slit down the cliff through the gaps. At the end of the second cave has an ancient star fruit tree that squirrels, monkeys, parrots come for fruit. There are so many bats and butterflies on the last cave bats, it is so beautiful inside the cave, even you can see the bottom and the fish that swim in it. There are boats waiting at the door to take tourists into the lake, each of which carries from 6 to 7 people. Before leaving the cruise into the small boat, do not forget to bring life jacket!

Excellent seafood in Halong

Excellent seafood of Vietnam, you must come to coastal region such as Halong, Nha Trang or Phu Quoc… Come to Halong bay, besides exploring the picturesque beauty of the gulf, should not miss the opportunity to enjoy excellent seafood dishes which become trade mark as follow

1. Grilled Chopped Squid (Chả Mực)
The fish dish appear in my mine is Grilled Chopped Squid. It is absolutely one of the most Vietnamese excellent seafood. This dish has its own flavor, yellow color and special taste which comes from Halong cannot be mistaken with other places. Normally, Vietnamese bring home some kilograms of Cha Muc as a gift for friends or relatives when they come to visit Halong.
The good Grilled Chopped Squid after processing has yellow color, fragrant smell, a little bit crunchy and tough with less fat. The taste is blended with special sauce making a delicious dish. The most common combination is that squid serves with steamed white sticky rice and coconut water or spring rolls

A little tip to find the good one is food area next to the Cross street (phố Cây Tháp). According to me, this place sales the best one in Halong!

2. Earthworm (Sá Sùng)
They’re marine worms that were first described in 1827 by a French zoologist. They are mollusk that lived only in the coastal sands where high tide and low tide makes dune. Sa Sung have much nutritional value such as amino acids, glycine, alanine, glutamine, succinic ... and taurine, minerals. An excellent seafood that natural gifts for human!

In Vietnam, they live much more in coastal area of Van Don and Mong Cai (Quang Ninh province), Cu Be and Turtle Island in Nha Trang province, Con Dao Island… The fresh Sa Sung is about 5 to 10 cm long and 15 cm long in particular sometimes. Harvest season is from March to July. Fishermen often dig at dune when low tides occur.

They’re sandy, so need to roast them in a dry skillet. Use medium heat, turn and shake the skillet for the while, and dry it in the sun twice or thrice until they puff up a bit, and darken. Then break them into sections and shake out the sand.
Dried earthworm

One tip of Vietnamese recipes to make an excellent Pho (Noodle) is Sa Sung. Dried marine worm product that’s full of tasty, a deep savory-sweetness, when put it into the pot of pho broth the broth becomes remarkably fragrant.

Special, dried earthworm is roasted, it turns yellow color and have aromatic odor with fragrance of the sea. Sa sung is served with chili sauce lettuce, herbs, and drink beer that enough to satisfy even the most fastidious guest

3. Horseshoe crab
Horseshoe crabs are always together with their mates and they are ancient creatures. They are also used in intensive research for cancer cure. It has been warned to eat them because eating the wrong organ of the horseshoe crab can make allergic or get a high. But if cook knows how to make, it becomes a delicious dish. That is the reason why not easy to find the restaurant sales it in Halong.
Horseshoe crab salad

From horseshoe crab can be processed to many excellent and exotic dishes such as: horseshoe crab's blood curds, horseshoe crab salad, fried sweet and sour crab legs, fried horseshoe crab’s eggs, steamed horseshoe crab, fried breaded horseshoe crab and fried horseshoe crab with vermicelli...
As I know, the good one is serve at Gieng Don Street and Cao Xanh Street.

4. Clam
A saltwater bivalve with a sea-salty flavor and a succulent texture and own a good source of zinc, which supports the immune system clams are used to bulk out dishes such as pies, soups and stews
Steamed clam

Dishes made from clam offered extremely attractive taste. Contrary to horseshoe crab or earthworm, almost any seafood restaurant in Halong have it in the menu items, so it is not difficult for you to taste the dish then cannot forget when leaving

5. Geoduck Clam
Geoduck clam is rare seafood and has high economic value. In Vietnam, Geoduck clam lives in Khanh Hoa province, Quang Ninh province, Hai Phong province... Geoduck clam’s meat is aroma, sweet and very nutritious and especially good for men. It is often processed to delicious dishes such as porridge, boiled, steamed, baked...
Fried Geoduck Clam

No matter how to cook, geoduck clam must eat when it is still hot to feel all the crunchy and sweet of its. Bite a piece of geoduck clam’s meat, you will feel the characteristic sweetness, charming that spreading out the tongue with extremely pleasant aroma
